beyond east and west

The art in this show addresses various experiences of travel, exile, diaspora, alienation and integration, feelings of longing and belonging, memories of places and people, encounters with divergent views of sexuality and gender, alternate political understandings of the world, and cultural practices that both divide and unite us.

Mona Hatoum:
Video work: Measures of distance-explored how her relationship with her mother has been affected by their years apart. The visual portion of this video overlays photographs of her mother in the shower with the Arabic script of her mother's letters to her. The soundtrack juxtaposes taped conversations between the artist and her mother discussing the making of the video with the voice of Hatoum reading English translations of the letters.
